a deal on the so-called fiscal cliff. we've all been talking about it. but with just a few days to go, what happens if we do fall off that cliff? doug stand big in washington right now with what could happen if a deal isn't reached. doug? >> good morning. you're right, we're going to have some of the big players back here in washington today. a message for any of them, it may be coming from starbucks. if you order a coffee anywhere in the dc area right now, they're going to write the message, come together, kind of an urgent plea for the president and members of congress to come up with a plan to avert the fiscal cliff. as far as we know, there is not a starbucks on board air force one. and that's exactly where president obama is right now. slowly making his way to issue with a wash. giving him time to make his next move. congress will be back in session as well. this is the first time since 1970 that a house of congress -- in this case the senate -- conducted legislative business in the week between christm new. doesn't mean they're going to get anything done. the most likely outcome

the fiscal cliff, and that was reflected today on the sunday shows from both democrats and republicans, take a listen. >> passing plan b the other night would not have changed the outcome, we're going to go over the cliff before, we're going to go over the cliff now. you cannot negotiate with someone that doesn't want to negotiate. >> in the aftermath of the house republicans rejecting speaker boehner's plan b, i feel it's more likely we will go over the cliff than not, and that -- if we allow that to happen, it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time. maybe ever in american history. >> officially, the president is expected to be here -- or is supposedly here in hawaii through the new year, i think the expectation at this point is that with congress returning, president obama is likely to go back to washington to oversee things as they move. or as the fiscal cliff comes nearer and the u.s. goes over it. >> can we expect any other lawmakers to step up to the plate and kick start negotiations? what about senate minority leader mitch mcconnel

with very big issues. in both houses of congress, if we get through this fiscal cliff and get to january, people will rightfully ask is there a better way to do this? since we seem to have a majority in both chambers that would like to solve the problem, but procedurally we're not getting to an answer. >> soon to be senator tim scott takes the oath next week, the only african-american senator, it highlights an interesting dichotomy. republicans have more minorities in the senate than democrats, while the party itself struggles with minority voters. >> i think you hit the nail on the head. clearly the republicans are having a major problem reaching out not just to people of color, but to women and so forth. i think what the republican party is trying to do is say, you know what? we have to do a better job. tim scott is a conservative from south carolina and also he's a earl if legislator in terms of being in the house of representatives, so it's perfect sense for him to go to the senate. we also see to a certain degree the first latino from texas, ted cruz, coming into the senate as well.
